The Middle East Reformed Fellowship is a relatively new mission organisation. It was started in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1971 when three young believers met for fellowship and mutual encouragement. Their vision centred around presenting the whole Gospel to the whole man. The three were united in a desire to "proclaim the whole counsel of God" and they established a growing fellowship. The membership steadily grew and the Middle East Reformed Fellowship (MERF) was fully organized in 1974. However in 1975 civil war broke out in Lebanon and the members were scattered around the world, but as result a number of regional groups were established, and eventually in 1983 a reorganized MERF began under the leadership of one of the three original founders.
The recent political upheavals in the Arab world have affected churches in the Middle East. It is not yet clear what the final effect of all the changes will be on the established churches. However it has shown that countries which were considered closed can be reached through electronic media .
MERF's work in the Middle East is its primary region of ministry. MERF seeks to serve Christ in His world by encouraging and strengthening the Church throughout the Middle East. The history of the Middle East dates back to ancient times, and throughout its history the Middle East has been a major centre of world affairs. The Middle East is also the historical origin of three of the world’s major religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Publishing and circulating sound Reformed literature in local languages has from the very beginning been at the heart of MERF's strategy. In addition to several simple evangelistic tracts and pamphlets, MERF has been involved in translating and publishing more substantial works in local languages. As a result of training endeavours, the Fellowship has decided to encourage gifted nationals to write suitable materials in their own native language. MERF's literature projects fall into three categories. Evangelism and Discipleship, Bible Study Aids, to encourage the proper study and understanding of the Scriptures, including commentaries, and Theological Resources for the training of church leaders. Other ministries include: Evangelism, Church Extension, Biblical Training, and Diaconal Aid. MERF also works in Indonesia and Asia. For more information visit their website: www.merf.org
